Did you know that the early church prayed through many of the Psalms every day? Or that Jesus prayed through the Psalms while on the cross? That the Book of Psalms is the most quoted OT book in the New Testament?
The Book of Psalms has captivated generations and has drawn interest from diverse groups of people. Many of the theologians and scholars have called it the “epitome of the whole Scripture.” Singers and songwriters have stolen its verses and sung them as their own. And even in the periods of Church history where most common lay people did not have access to Scripture, many families had a copy of the Psalms and used the Psalms as devotionals to teach their children. The Psalms truly is an amazing book.
Perhaps because of the authors. The psalmists were real. They didn’t cower behind religious pretenses to try to get God to move. They laid out their hearts raw and bare before God, questions and all. Sometimes the sense is ecstatic joy, sometimes the deepest most painful depression, and sometimes the angry fist-waving experiences wondering where God is. But in those questions, in those blatantly honest emotions, God answered.
The Psalms, then, were always meant to be experienced, not just read, and not just studied. The theology was not so much important as experiencing the God behind the doctrine- through singing and praying.
In this course, we'll learn the history and importance of the Book of Psalms and a practical tool to help with praying, memorizing, and living out the Psalms- the Psalm Circle.
